DARE Multi Sports
The DARE Multi Sports project is a project aimed at working to extend the values of the DARE Primary and Secondary curriculum. DARE in consultation with educationalists and sports professionals have developed over a 6 month pilot period, a ten week cycling programme. This programme operates as a one module per week - ten week programme or as single, self contained one off lessons. These aim to teach children to focus on issues such as health and wellbeing, team interaction and personal goals. These values which build upon our Primary course achievements will help to encourage children to make the right decisions throughout adolescence and for the rest of their lives.
Utilising the pilot cycle project and the sporting experience of West Nottinghamshire College, DARE has now developed their sporting project to encompass 15 different sports and activities to offer a truly multi sport package.
The Cycle course has been running as a pilot for six months at the DARE cycle track in Forest Town, Mansfield. The aim of the pilot scheme was to develop the concept of a modularised sporting programme that could incorporate the key messages that DARE seeks to impart to children and young adults throughout its current programmes. The course materials look to build on these skills whilst developing fitness, team building, raising self esteem and communication skills in the children.
There are three ways in which the new sporting facilities operate. The mobile unit (DARE Sport) will be used to take the two session leaders and the equipment needed to run the course to remote locations. This will mean that they can go to the schools to operate and there is no reliance upon children travelling and ensuring there are enough guardians available to travel. With one head coach and a sessional worker a mobile unit can work with up to 12 children per session at almost any location. DARE will also be able to offer at its new site all of the facilities to carry out its programmes in full. This means that we will be able to run a maximum of three sessions per day at our static site; an AM, PM and early evening slot. These sessions will be held for the disaffected schools we already take onto the course, but will also mean we can extend our reach into the community by taking on children from mainstream local schools after 3pm.
The courses will help children build their fitness and general health whilst dealing with childhood issues such as self esteem, motivation, communication skills, responsibility, discipline, nutritional understanding and competitive spirit. These courses are also designed to be a natural precursor to our out of hour’s programmes so that we can introduce the children into Dare’s community programmes; we are also working in partnership with each sports governing body to make sure each and every child has an exit route to carry on with sport once they have completed their course. In conjunction with West Nottinghamshire College community sporting programs we also provide summer time facilities at a range of Behaviour Improvement Programme (BIP) schools across the county. By using these courses as a platform to these extra curricular activities we believe that we are offering even more of an extension to the DARE values giving the children more skills to deal with modern day life.
